Brisbane Market Report 132

Brisbane Market Report 132

It’s been a week of dry warm days and cold nights for our local growers, so we’re seeing good supplies across most produce lines.

Top fruit buys include blueberries, pineapple, watermelon, and both red and yellow pawpaws. Mangoes and new-season nectarines are beginning to appear: look for R2E2 and Kensington Pride mangoes from the Northern Territory ahead of the Queensland season starting next month. Donut peaches from Gatton and yellow peaches from Childers and northern NSW are a sure sign that summer is on its way.

Supplies of Mareeba-grown limes and Granny Smith apples are tightening, although the fruit that’s around is excellent quality. The winter supply of bananas is coming to an end, so expect slightly higher prices until the new season bananas arrive. Raspberries and mandarins are pricey this week.

New season asparagus are one of our favourite spring vegetables at the moment; it’s grown in Victoria and reasonably priced. Add it to salads leaf varieties like Coral, Oak, Butter, Baby Cos and Mignonette, which are all abundant. Other well-priced salad vegies include snow peas, beans, grape and cherry tomatoes, carrots, cabbages, red and green chillies and iceberg lettuce. Other local vegies in good supply include Boonah-grown silverbeet, kale and baby fennel.

With plentiful supplies of melons, why not try something different with the candy melons. Their bright yellow, smooth-skinned appearance are hard to miss on the shelves: look for aromatic fruit that feels heavy for its size and store whole at room temperature for up to one week. High in natural sugars, the orange-fleshed fruit has a similar flavour to rockmelons and makes a delicious snack or addition to fruit salads. Contrast its sweetness in a salad with rocket, smoked chicken, slivered almonds, goat’s cheese, and a classic mustard vinaigrette.

This week’s top picks are Asian vegies, which are perfect for the warming season. Stir-fries should be on the menu this week. Add maximum flavour to meals with all the wonderful herbs around including coriander, basil, and parsley. Yandina-grown ginger is also a great buy.
