Brisbane Produce Market Report - 01

It's still the best time for salads with prices low and the quality high with bargain hunters also finding some cheaper vegetables and a select number of seasonal fruits to fill their trolleys.

Cabbage and cauliflower have fallen to bargain prices this week.

In addition, Asian vegetables, asparagus, beans, beetroot, capsicum, carrot, celery, silverbeet, sweet corn, zucchini, onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes are all reasonably priced.

Leeks, with their onion type flavour, are also reasonably priced but of mixed quality.

Be prepared to pay firm prices for good quality eggplant, fennel, parsnips, snow peas, squash mushrooms and pumpkin.

Avocados are firmly priced but most salad items are of top quality and reasonably priced. This includes tomatoes, lettuce, mixed leaf salad, cucumbers, eshallots and a variety of herbs.

Melons are of great value and quality this week, with rockmelon, watermelon and honeydew on your local fruit shop's shelves.  They are an excellent source of vitamin C.

Look for other seasonal fruits at reasonable prices including blueberries, limes that have dramatically dropped in price, valencia oranges, pineapple and pawpaw.

You will have to pay more for good quality apples, bananas, strawberries, navel oranges, kiwifruit, mangoes and pears.  Mandarins are firmly priced and of poor quality.

Some fruit, such as raspberries, lemons, Australian grapes, figs, passionfruit and all stonefruit are expensive but there is plenty on the shelves.

Pomegranate lovers will find some expensive US produce available. They are the size of an apple, with a leathery red/purple exterior that opens up to reveal hundreds of juicy sweet crimson kernels covered by red, gelatin like flesh with a sweet acid flavour.
