Taro

Taro root is the thick, tuber corm of the taro plant and is a very important starchy vegetable in many cuisines and diets.

It is high in fibre and is often compared to a sweet potato in texture.

Taro can not be eaten raw as it contains high levels of Oxalates but this can be eliminated when cooked.

To prepare, wash the root, trim the ends, peel away its outer tough hairy skin using a knife.  Place its white interior flesh in cold water to remove sticky sap.
The health benefits of taro root include its ability to improve digestion, lower your blood sugar levels, prevent certain types of cancers, protect the skin,

boost vision health, increase circulation, decrease blood pressure, aid the immune system, and prevent heart disease, while also supporting muscle and nerve health.

Taro can be boiled, baked, fried, steamed, mashed or used in stews and casseroles.
It can also be used to make:
Chips
Cakes
Pancakes
Bread
Flour
Muffins
Ice Cream
