Brisbane Market Report 131

Warmer spring days are bringing a surge of fruits and vegetables to the Brisbane Produce Market this week.  We’re well supplied with excellent quality pineapple, watermelon, and rockmelons, along with locally grown limes, passionfruit and pawpaw. The Queensland season for oranges, lemons, and mandarins has finished, but produce for the southern states is keeping these fruits in stock.

We’re seeing increasing quantities of blueberries from New South Wales, so expect them to become more affordable. Also keep an eye out for that childhood favourite, mulberries, which have started to arrive from Bundaberg.

With strawberries in the news for all the wrong reasons, we encourage everyone to get behind our hardworking strawberry growers and continue buying strawberries. Take care to cut them up before eating, or buy up big to make jam, tarts, cakes, and compotes. For a simple breakfast, spread toasted fruit bread with sweetened ricotta cheese and sliced strawberries. Follow the hashtag #smashastawb on social media for more inspiration.

In vegies, Queensland-grown snow peas, silverbeet, zucchini, pumpkin, beetroot, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potato, yellow squash, and eggplant are all abundant this week.

For salads, your best value ingredients are iceberg lettuce from Gatton, butter and red oak lettuce, salad leaves, asparagus, rocket, spring onions, radishes, new season baby potatoes, Lebanese cucumbers, and a huge range of tomatoes including cherry, Roma, and grape.

One of the best bargains in the market this week is cabbage: white and red cabbage as well as locally grown Chinese cabbage (wombok). Stock up for coleslaw or gut-friendly fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi.

This week’s top pick is the classic green bean, which is grown across the state from Gympie to north Queensland. We know green vegies are good for us, but the unassuming bean really packs a punch with protein and vitamins A, B1 and B2. It’s incredibly versatile and adds crunch and sweetness whether blanched in salads and side dishes, or stir-fried in Asian dishes — it could be as simple as a stir-fry of garlic, ginger, sesame oil, sesame seeds and beans.
