Brisbane Market Report 154

Brisbane Market Report 154

Despite the impact of high temperatures and dry conditions on some fruit and vegetable lines, the good news is that Victorian and north Queensland supplies are bouncing back.

New season Red Delicious, Gala, Jazz, Kanzi and Granny Smith apples are all in supply, but volumes are lower. Banana prices are coming down, and grapes are at their best in terms of value and quality. Shepard avocados are plentiful, and we’re also noticing some exotic fruits like the gorgeous crimson-coloured rambutan (a close relative of the lychee) arriving from up north.

Lemons from Gayndah and limes from north Queensland are top buys this week – stock up to make batches of citrus curd and preserves. Tropical fruits like papaya, passionfruit, and pineapple are excellent eating.

Victorian strawberries and Tasmanian blueberries are in supply, as are nashi from Shepparton and custard apples from Beerwah. The stone fruit season is about to finish but there are still plenty of plums around — we like the small sugar plums from Young.

It’s been great to see vegies like leeks, rocket, salad leaves, silverbeet, spinach, spring onions, and wombok all recovering from the heat wave this week.

Beans, capsicums and cucumbers are fantastic at the moment, as are sweet potatoes and squash. You’ve got the makings of a vegie-packed stir-fry with good supplies of corn, carrots, snow peas, zucchini, and chillies.

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and lettuce are all in short supply due to the heat. Tomato prices also continue to be affected, but locally grown cherry tomatoes are good value.

This week’s top pick is green beans, also known as French beans. Packed with fibre, vitamin A, and oxidants, beans punch above their weight when it comes to nutrition. Look for beans with a bright green colour and a slim, crisp stalk that snaps when broken. Store in the fridge for up to four days. Beans are also one of the most versatile vegetables out there, as you can be steamed or boiled for salads and side dishes, stir-fried in a range of Asian dishes, or added to heavier main courses like curries and stews. For speed and flavour, you can’t beat lightly boiled beans with olive oil, lemon juice, parmesan, and crispy breadcrumbs.
