Strawberries are always fantastic quality at this time of year and raspberries are plentiful. Fresh pomegranates are arriving from New South Wales — sprinkle the seeds over rice pilafs, warm salads, grilled halloumi, and Middle Eastern stews and tagines.
Hass avocados are having a bumper season and we’ve been impressed with their quality and flavour. Packham pears, golden yellow papayas and most apples varieties are eating well.
Imperial and Honey Murcott mandarins, medium-sized navels and lemons are all good quality now — eat them as snacks or use their zest and juice in warming desserts like self-saucing puddings. Pineapples are also well-supplied and make a beautiful tart or grilled with a sprinkle of brown sugar and lime juice.
In short supply this week are pomelo, blueberries, rockmelon, Cavendish bananas, passionfruit, and limes. Custard apples are reaching the end of their season.
Plenty of vegetables are going strong despite the cold weather, with good supplies of Asian vegies, brussels sprouts, cabbage, capsicum, celery, broccolini, wombok, rocket, ginger, leek, kohlrabi, fennel, lettuce, mushrooms, shallots, spinach, sweet potatoes, and watercress.
The broccoli coming out of the Lockyer Valley is excellent — try steaming small florets then sautéing them with olive oil, garlic, chilli flakes and stock. Reduce for 10 minutes and serve over cooked orecchiette or shell pasta with lashings of parmesan.
Other stand-out vegetables this week include eggplant, radish, pumpkins, rhubarb and salad leaves. Zucchini is in good supply, but prices are variable.
We have moderate supplies of spring onions, snow peas, tomatoes and celeriac. Vegetables in short supply this week are broad beans, cauliflower, corn, green beans, Aussie garlic, silverbeet, squash, and most herbs.
This week’s top pick is strawberries, which are currently streaming in from the Sunshine Coast. Look for strawberries with a deep red colour and sweet aroma and store in the fridge. Rich in vitamin C, strawberries are incredibly versatile: use them to top porridge or pancakes, mix them in smoothies and sorbets, or add them to cakes, crumbles and muffins with ingredients like ginger, orange, nuts, apple, cinnamon, natural yoghurt and sour cream.
