Brisbane Market Report 178

Spring has sprung and there’s no shortage of great value vegies at the Brisbane Produce Market this week.

In fruit, in abundance we have strawberries and blueberries — they’re sweet, full of flavour and an absolute bargain. Rockmelons and yellow and red papaya are also great buys.

The mandarin season is coming to an end, but Honey Murcotts are still widely available. Pineapple supplies from the Sunshine Coast and North Queensland are improving, while Valencias are the pick of the oranges.

The apple season is a little slow and Hass avocado supplies are lower, but the quality is still excellent. Supplies of dragon fruit, grapes, and Packham pears are solid.

Limes, passionfruit, raspberries and bananas are all short. Watermelon isn’t at its best this week, so we’d go with other options like rockmelon instead.

In vegies, beans, cabbage, leeks, lettuce, radish, rocket, silverbeet, and baby spinach are all well supplied.

With the plentiful quantities of Asian vegetables, wombok, snow peas and coriander around this week, stir-fries should be on the menu. Australian asparagus is a stand-out and can also be used in Asian cooking — try it in a stir-fry with chicken, lemon zest, honey, garlic and soy. Serve with steamed rice and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

Keep an eye out for the large heirloom varieties of tomatoes — there are some gorgeous looking tomatoes coming from Peak Crossing in the Scenic Rim area of Queensland.

Capsicum, okra, rhubarb, and basil are short, while broccoli supplies are slightly down. Eggplant isn’t quite matching the quality we’ve been used to in recent months. Ginger and garlic supplies are mostly imported at the moment.

This week’s top pick is corn, with great quality supplies currently arriving from Bowen. Look for corn in bright green husks with pale silks. Corn kernels should be round, shiny and plump with no sign of shrivelling. Store corn in the fridge and use within a few days. To cook, remove the husk and steam, boil, grill or barbecue. For a spicy side dish, chargrill corn and serve topped with lime juice, parsley, garlic butter and pepper.
