Brisbane Market Report - 14

Most good quality fresh produce remains firmly priced this week but there is great news for fruit lovers with new season mandarins and cheap bananas the best buys of the week.

In the vegetable aisle, the vegetable category known as "hard lines" are great value for money with onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes reasonably priced, while pumpkin is cheap.

You will also find reasonably priced Asian vegetables, beetroot, brussels sprouts and eggplant.

Expect to pay firm prices for beans, imported asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, celery, fennel, leeks, parsnips, squash, sweet corn, zucchini and mushrooms.  Silverbeet is expensive.

For the first time in many months, carrots have risen in price so look for ones of bright colour, avoiding those with splits or sprouts. Carrots should be firm and straight.

For salad lovers, lettuce is reducing in price and is reasonable, along with mixed leaf salad, cucumber, eshallots and herbs, although you will find basil hard to find and priced a bit higher.

Expect to pay firm prices for all categories of tomatoes and avocados.

Plentiful new season mandarins and bananas are well priced and perfect for school lunch boxes but you will also find reasonably priced limes, valencia oranges and all melons.

Lemons have risen in price as the growers turn their attentions to picking the new season mandarins. You will also find grapes, figs, kiwifruit, pears, passionfruit and pawpaw firmly priced.

All berries are struggling with quality and are expensive but there are plenty of additional tasty fruits at this time of year to serve. Look for good quality dragon fruit, custard apples, carambola (star fruit), feijoa, pomegranate and nashi pears.

For those who love making jam, rosellas are also in season and the tip from one Brisbane Produce Market wholesaler is to try cooking them with rhubarb.
