Brisbane Market Report - 31

Quality is the name of the game at the Brisbane Produce Market as Queensland's mild winter weather has produced some of the best seasonal quality produce available.

Beans and beetroot have been well priced lately and those prices are set to drop further, but the big price mover this week is zucchini, which should be a great buy.

In the vegetable aisle, celery, eggplant and leaks are all dropping in price and shoppers should look for cheap broccoli and sweet corn, as well as good prices on parsnips, pumpkin, silverbeet, squash and sweet potato.

Cauliflower and snow peas are firming in price and expect to find brussel sprouts, carrots, fennel and mushrooms all priced firmly.

You can also expect to pay a little more for staples such as onions and potatoes.

In the salad line, mixed lettuce is still going cheap, while lettuce and tomatoes have firmed in price. You will pay a little more for cucumbers and capsicums, but you will find reasonable prices for avocados, and eshallots.

Herbs are reasonably priced, but supply of dill is still low, joined by sage this week, so expect to pay a little more for these lines.

Strawberries are reasonably priced, with the price of raspberries and blueberries already starting to drop.

The first Australian stone fruits are starting to trickle through the Market, but the majority of the apricots, peaches, nectarines and plums on the shelves, as well as grapes, are still imported from the USA, so expect to pay more for these lines.

Prices are dropping this week on bananas and watermelon with great prices also available on kiwifruit, rockmelon, pineapples and passionfruit, so look out for good buys on these lines.

Mandarins, navel oranges and pawpaw are all reasonable priced, while apples, honeydew melons, lemons, limes and pears are all priced firmly.

Finally, if you're lucky enough to pick up one of the first mangoes of the season, you can expect to pay a little more for the privilege.
