Brisbane Market Report - 33

Spring is still a great time for vegetables with plenty on the shelves but you may have to look a bit harder for bargains when it comes to quality salad and fruit with their most bountiful harvest times still some weeks away.

Asian vegetables, beetroot and parsnips are the most reduced buys this week while you can expect to pay reasonable prices for brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, celery, eggplant, fennel and sweet potatoes.

Beetroot and broccoli are also reasonably priced but they are expected to firm in the days ahead while mushrooms are reducing in cost.

Asparagus is expensive just before its harvest season begins as are potatoes which have been affected by rains and other cropping issues in recent weeks.

Capsicums are good quality but more costly than usual with reds firmer in price over their green counterparts.

Snow peas, silverbeet and squash are firmly priced while sweet corn and zucchini have bounced about in price and returned to firm.

In the salad aisle, look for lettuce, mixed salad leaf, eshallots and herbs at reasonable prices.

Cucumbers and tomatoes are expensive while avocados are ranged from firm to expensive, depending on their quality. The popular, pebbly skinned hass avocado is eating better this week over the large, round reed variety which has a firmer textured skin ideal for mashing into dips or guacamole.

In the fruit section, strawberries, blueberries, limes and rockmelons are at rock bottom prices and eating well.

Expect to pay reasonable prices for valencia oranges, USA grapes, kiwifruit, watermelon and passionfruit.

Bananas and navel oranges have both risen in price and are firm, along with raspberries, lemons, pears and pineapples. Mandarins have also firmed in price with murcotts the best eating, mainly for their sweetness that make this large variety great for eating or juicing. It's sometimes known as the honey murcott because of its sweetness.

Figs, honeydew melon, pawpaw and most stonefruit, mainly imported from the USA, are expensive.
