Brisbane Market Report - 60 Posted on 23 March 2017

Heavy rains in the growing regions, with more predicted to be on the way, will firm fresh produce prices in the days ahead but there is still plenty available at the Brisbane Produce Market for Your Local Fruit Shop stores to select from.

In the vegetable aisle, look for top quality and reasonably priced Asian vegetables, asparagus, brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots, eggplant, snow peas, silverbeet, sweet corn, zucchini, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes and pumpkin.

Celery has firmed in price and will cost you more this week, along with beetroot, fennel, leeks, parsnips and mushrooms.

Beans are hard to find with the hand-picked varieties the most prevalent and expensive.  Expect to pay top dollar for cabbage and capsicums as well.

Tomatoes have fallen in price but are still costing more than usual.  Brisbane Produce Market wholesalers are tipping that prices could rise again if the expected rains affect the harvest.

A number of other salad items are firmly priced including avocados, lettuce, continental cucumbers and eshallots.

Lebanese cucumbers, mixed leaf salad and all herbs are still in plentiful supply and reasonably priced.

In the fruit aisle, take the option to try something more exotic with soursop, pomegranates, dragon fruit, guava, custard apples and mangosteens in season.  The first of the feijoas have also arrived but they will be cheaper, larger and taste better in about a fortnight when the season begins in earnest.

The best priced fruits include new season royal galas and jazz apples, limes, grapes, figs, kiwifruit, watermelon, honey dew and plums, which are all eating well.

Poorer quality, end of season stone fruit is also reasonably priced.

Bananas, strawberries, lemons, valencia oranges, rockmelon, pears, pineapples, passionfruit and pawpaw will cost you more than usual while raspberries, blueberries and imported navel oranges and mandarins are expensive.
